In Our Opinion...
The Pierre & Vacances Lacanau Holiday Village is a small & friendly family resort in the heart of a pine forest in the Médoc Bleu region of Aquitaine. The Village is an easy cycle ride through the pines to the sandy ocean beaches and the vast lake of Lacanau is 5kms the other way.

There's a wide range of activities available on-site through the
Kids' Clubs, and there's plenty to do locally including golf, surfing, tennis, horse-riding, watersports and cycling.

The environment is a natural blend of fresh pine forests, sandy beaches and freshwater lakes. This is an ideal venue for family seaside holidays .

Kids' Clubs
Children's Clubs
The Pierre & Vacances Holiday Village offers 2 clubs tailored to kids of all ages up to 15. The clubs have a distinctly French atmosphere; the first language is French although given the multi-national mix of kids here, most staff speak good English. However, it's a good chance for your kids to come home with a few simple phrases in another language - and the chance to make friends with kids from all over Europe.

Because the clubs are so popular, you should book a place in advance. You can also save money this way. Once you're at the village, you and your kids can decide in which activities to participate.

Please reserve places at the Clubs at the time of booking your accommodation. The Kids' Clubs sessions will be planned locally at reception the day after your arrival.

Discover Lacanau
Lacanau Tourist Office

Lacanau-Océan is the pre-eminent sea-side town of the Médoc Bleu, an area noted for a wide variety of activities and attractions. The town of Lacanau is a typical seaside resort which swells in the summer as visitors pour in from France and all over Europe. It's easy to see why - the town has a very informal atmosphere, there's a huge expanse of long sandy beach and the local area is a natural haven for enjoying the outdoors.

Domaine Départemental de Sports and de Loisirs de Bombannes - known as "Bombannes" for short (the French like to over-elaborate names where possible!). Located in the heart of the pine forest, on the Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans, 15kms from the Village, this is one of France's premier leisure resorts with a varied choice of activities focusing on waterports plus gym, tennis, rock-climbing wall, archery, basque Pelota, sauna & hammam, children's leisure area.

Surfing & body-boarding:
excellent waves at Lacanau-Ocean, which every August hosts an edition of the world professional championship. Local surf clubs offer tuition for all levels and ages, plus board hire.

Lacanau Surf Club

Golf:
The
Lacanau-Ardilouse Golf Course is on your doorstep (18 holes; par 72, 5,926 m). Designed in 1980 by John Harris, it is a very enjoyable course, built on undulating terrain among pine forest and sand-dunes. There is also a driving range and practice green, a pro-shop offering equipment, advice and lessons, plus a clubhouse serving drinks, snacks and a full lunch-time menu.

Lacanau is also home to the 9 hole Golf de la Méjanne (par 36, 3,209 m) and Golf du Baganais (par 27, 910m) courses. Outside July & August the Lacanau Golf Pass offers a round at all three Lacanau courses for 70€, or unlimited golf for 6 days at all three courses for 190€.

Two top quality courses are found 45 kms away at the highly-rated Golf du Médoc: les Châteaux - par 71, 6316 m and les Vignes - par 71, 6220 m. Further courses at Arcachon, Gujan-Mestras and around Bordeaux. Visit our Golf in Aquitaine page for further details.

Lacanau Ardilouse also participates in the Médoc Golf Pass scheme with Golf de Margaux and the two courses at Golf du Médoc.

Watersports:
sailing
, windsurfing, water-skiing and kayaking at the local lakes. Bombannes, on the western edge of lac d'Hourtin-Carcans, is an excellent base for a day's activity on the lake. Windsurf boards and optimists can be rented.

The local lakes are a great opportunity for whiling away the hours in tranquility, listening to the water lapping the sandy shores. The surrounding forest are perfect for picnics and rambling. The lake beach at Moutchic is popular, but Longarisse is the one the locals go to!

Horse-riding:
Lacanau counts two major equestrian centres each offering tuition and trails through the local forests.
»
Lacanau Horse-Riding

Cycling and hiking trails:
over 120 kms of safe cycle tracks lead through the forests up and down this stretch of coast, from Carcans-Maubuisson north of Lacanau, all the way, ultimately, to the Pointe de Cap Ferret to the south. Several local bike hire shops.

Tennis:
Ardilouse Tennis Centre is 500m and offers 16 courts (4 indoor) and 2 squash courts. Book on-site at the Club House. Group and one-to-one courses available.

Balnéothérapy
Centre de Balnéothérapie Vitalparc - 600m. There are various courses of treatments available - book in advance (please ask us for contact details).

Discover the Region
Discover the Médoc Bleu region of Aquitaine

Lacanau
is an excellent base for discovering the Médoc, bassin d'Arcachon and Bordeaux and its environs. As well as the dunes, forests, lakes and ocean of the Médoc Bleu, there is the outstanding natural beauty of the bassin d'Arcachon or the vineyards and heritage of the Médoc Rouge (the wine producing part of the Médoc, so named for obvious reasons!) and on into the Bordeaux region. It's all in easy reach.

Not much further inland the forests, lakes and oceans are gradually replaced by the famous vines of the 'médoc rouge' and its famous appelations of Pauillac and Margaux. There are many vineyards where you can visit and taste some of the famous wines. Two very approachable châteaux are the under-rated (and relatively inexpensive) Château Maucaillou, a medium-sized, family-run estate in Moulis-en-Médoc; there is an interesting museum exhibiting some of the history of wine-making. Or for a very special visit, Château Giscours in the Margaux region organises tastings of various vintages of its grand crus classés, hosted by a particularly engaging, unpretentious and plain-speaking 'oenologue' (Master of Wine).

Heading south is the nature, wildlife and, above all, oysters of the bassin d'Arcachon and Presqu'Ile de Cap Ferret. You can explore the fascinating oyster-farming villages that run down the bassin coast of the Cap peninsula; Piraillan is particularly charming. Or head for the tip and climb to the top of the famous Cap Ferret lighthouse - the views across the bassin to Arcachon and the Dune de Pyla are breathtaking. Or climb one of the Atlantic dunes to walk off an early-ish dinner in one of Cap Ferret village's many bistros and watch the sunset. Bliss!

Around the other side of the basin is Arcachon, a popular French resort; a part of the town known as the Ville d'Hiver (winter town) is well worth strolling to see the quirky architecture of its many 19th century villas.

South of Arcachon is the famous Dune du Pyla, the largest sand dune in Europe, standing at over 100 metres. A journey to the summit (try it without the staircase provided!) is a must; sunrise and sunset are the best times.

The bassin d'Arcachon is also home to wide variety of birdlife and consequently is a popular birdwatching destination. In fact, there are birdwatching reserves at nearby Parc Ornotholiqique du Teich and Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird Island) in the Bassin which can be visited by boats that depart from the Arcachon jetties. This is a prime bird habitat - the Bassin d'Arcachon is so shallow that only 20% of it is submerged at low tide.

If you're feeling beached out, Bordeaux is well under an hour away and is a good option for a day-trip, whether it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing or culture. Walking around the 18th century old town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you can begin to imagine the city’s commercial and maritime past.

Medieval gems of the Gironde east of Bordeaux are also wonderful days out; St Emilion, with its 11th century basilica, is the best known but can be busy; St Macaire and La Réole are also enjoyable. Obviously there are many more chateaux over here but
an altogether different wine experience can be had at Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa, in the middle of the Château Smith Haut Lafitte, vineyards, just south of Bordeaux. The spa offers unique beauty treatments derived from grand cru grapes of the Graves appelation renowned for their anti-ageing and micro-circulation improving properties - in short, visitors apparently come out feeling good!
