Summary :
A summery, relaxing villa, large enough to accommodate two families
without living on top of each other, pleasant
living areas and terrace, and a splash pool to cool down in at the
end of a hot afternoon. The ocean shore is a 5-10 minute bike ride
away one way, the lac de Lacanau shore at le Moutchic not much further
the other - shaded areas and gentler waters mean young families
often prefer it here. Golf, horse-riding and tennis are all within
1 km. With great vineyards, heritage, wildlife and nature on the
doorstep, this is a pleasant base for a varied and relaxing holiday
by the sea. |

Just a kilometre from the centre of Lacanau-Océan,
two kilometres maximum from the beach and located just off one of
the many cycle trails that wind around Lacanau, it is possible to
spend two weeks here only getting in the car to arrive and go home
again! The villa itself is located in a quiet, smart residential
part of Lacanau - some of the neighbouring houses are modern architectural
gems. Lacanau-Océan
is a busy resort in July and August - there's lots going on in the
day time and evenings, and quieter outside these months. Beaches
stretch for miles, so finding your own patch at whatever time of
year is not difficult. Three golf courses are located within 3kms,
an 18-hole course plus two 9-hole courses - this house is very popular
with golfing groups. The attractions of the 'médoc rouge'
(the wine producing part), the bassin d'Arcachon and Cap Ferret
and heritage of Entre-Deux-Mers are in easy reach.
It is just a 45 minute drive to Bordeaux or its Mérignac
airport. The TGV serves the Gare St Jean in Bordeaux. The channel
port of St Malo can be reached in a good six hour run; the other
way, Santander is about three hours' drive.

Accommodation
:
Villa Antillaise is located off a quiet residential road on the
outskirts of Lacanau-Océan,
close to one of the many cycle paths that take you into the town
and its beaches. It has its own gated entrance, is protected by
mature hedges and is situated on a slope down from the road, giving
the site a lot of privacy.
The path leads to the area outside of the upper level of the house,
consisting of a decked terrace (approx. 50m2) with a small sun-deck
corner, plunge pool area and place for barbecue and garden table
and chairs.
From the terrace, entry is to the upper level living area via large
glass sliding doors. At one end is the lounge - a light wood floor,
bamboo furniture (sofa and two chairs), indoor plants and cream
painted walls give this a tropical feel. The TV provided has some
English-speaking satellite channels. At the other is a kitchenette
(with dishwasher, oven, microwave and fridge/freezer), separated
from the rest of the room by a tall breakfast bar. Next to the kitchen
is a breakfast table seating 4-6.
At this level there are also two comfortable double bedrooms, plus
a contemporary-designed shower room. From the living area, a short
wooden staircase leads to the spacious mezzanine level, a handy
area for children to play out of the sun for a while, or for adults
to find peace and quiet. There are two further single beds at this
level.
The lower level is accessed separately around the back of the villa
via the driveway. Shaded from the sun this is a cool part of the
house (and darker for the same reason). There's a small living area
with kitchenette in one corner (with television, fridge and two-ring
hob). The two lower bedrooms (a double and a twin) run off this
level. There is also a shower and wc. The standard of accommodation
here is simpler and more basic than upstairs.
Outside the villa there is private parking for 2-3 cars and a garage
for bicycles and surf-boards.
Villa Antillais is altogether a convenient combination of comfortable,
private villa and easy access to the bustle and life of Lacanau-Océan
town and beaches.

Local
Guide:
For lovers of all things outdoors, the Lacanau area
is a perfect place to come. The nearby beaches, 5-10 minutes away
by bike are lovely and sandy; you can lie and listen to the constant
rumble of the Atlantic rollers, watch the surfers, or go for a splash
yourself! There are also several schools in the town for windsurfing,
sailing and waterski-ing that
cater for all levels.
There are three golf courses half
a kilometre from the villa - two 9-hole
courses (Golf du Baganais and the Golf
de Méjanne) and one 18-hole course (Golf
d'Ardilouse) - and four indoor tennis courts, 20
outdoor courts plus two squash courts in
the forest, a short walk away. Riding stables are
less than a kilometre away, as is a fitness centre
- as if you'd need that if you're already doing everything else!
About 4 km inland from Villa Antillaise is the village of Le
Moutchic on the shore of the attractive lac de Lacanau.
Shaded
areas and gentler waters make this a pleasant change; many people
young families in particular prefer it here.
Not much further inland the forests, lakes and oceans of the 'médoc
bleu' are gradually replaced by the famous vines of the 'médoc
rouge' (no translation needed!) and its famous appelations of Pauillac
and Margaux. There are many vineyards where you
can visit and taste some of the famous wines. Two very approachable
châteaux are the under-rated (and relatively inexpensive)
Château Maucaillou, a medium-sized, family-run
estate in Moulis-en-Médoc; there is an interesting museum
exhibiting some of the history of wine-making. Or for a very special
visit, Château Giscours
in the Margaux region organises tastings of various vintages of
its grand crus classés, hosted by a particularly engaging,
unpretentious and plain-speaking 'oenologue' (Master of Wine).
Heading south is the nature, wildlife and, above all, oysters
of the bassin d'Arcachon and Presqu'Ile de Cap
Ferret. You can explore the fascinating oyster-farming
villages that run down the bassin coast of the Cap peninsula; Piraillan
is particularly charming. Or head for the tip and climb to the top
of the famous Cap Ferret lighthouse - the views
across the bassin to Arcachon and the Dune de Pyla are breathtaking.
Or climb one of the Atlantic dunes to walk off an early-ish dinner
in one of Cap Ferret village's many bistros and watch the sunset.
Bliss!
Around
the other side of the basin is Arcachon, a popular
French resort; a part of the town known as the Ville d'Hiver (winter
town) is well worth strolling to see the quirky architecture of
its many 19th century villas.
South of Arcachon is the famous Dune du Pyla, the
largest sand dune in Europe, standing at over 100 metres. A journey
to the summit (try it without the staircase provided!) is a must;
sunrise and sunset are the best times.
The Basin is also home to wide variety of birdlife and consequently
is a popular birdwatching destination. In fact, there are birdwatching
reserves at nearby Parc Ornotholiqique du Teich
and Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird Island) in the basin
which can be visited by boats that depart from the Arcachon jetties.
If
you're feeling beached out, Bordeaux
is well under an hour away and is a good option for a day-trip,
whether it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing or culture. Walking
around the 18th century old town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you
can begin to imagine the city’s commercial and maritime past.
Medieval gems of the Gironde east of Bordeaux are also wonderful
days out; St Emilion, with its 11th century basilica,
is the best known but can be busy; St Macaire and
La Réole are also enjoyable. Obviously there
are more chateaux over here but an
altogether different wine experience can be had at Caudalie
Vinotherapie Spa, in the middle of the Château Smith
Haut Lafitte, vineyards, just south of Bordeaux. The spa offers
unique beauty treatments derived from grand cru grapes of the Graves
appelation renowned for their anti-ageing and micro-circulation
improving properties - in short, visitors apparently come out feeling
good!
