Summary :
This is a high quality rental in the chic
Le Moulleau district of Arcachon, known for being refined, laid-back
and child-friendly, especially the beach: gentle waves and wonderful
views over to Cap Ferret and the lighthouse.
Loft d'Aquin is in a quiet street about 200m from the centre
and is, strictly speaking, an apartment, but it doesn't feel
like one! A spacious terrace, large, airy living room and proximity
to everything - beach, shops, cafes, restaurants - mean it's
a stylish, convenient and relaxing place to enjoy this part
of Aquitaine.

Loft d'Aquin (so named after rue Thomas d'Aquin, the name of street
the apartment is on!) is in the attractive district of Arcachon
called Le Moulleau, frequented in particular by discerning, considerate
Parisians. Le Moulleau is known for a family-friendly atmosphere,
long stretch of beach and the ideal mix of shops, cafés,
restaurants and boutiques.
The nearest shops are in central Le Moulleau, 200m from the house,
including a boulangerie and grocer's. There are several restaurants
and cafés in the centre as well.
Reaching Le Moulleau by trains and planes is easy. Bordeaux airport
is a 45 minute drive (BA from Gatwick, FlyBe from Bristol); Biarritz
(Ryanair from Stansted) and Bergerac (also served by Ryanair and
FlyBe) are both a two hour drive away. Arcachon train station
(served by TGV from Paris) is a 10-15 minute taxi ride.

Accommodation
:
Loft d'Aquin is situated on the highest (third) level of a residential
apartment building set back from the road in a quiet part of Le
Moulleau.
There is off-road parking in the residence's car park. A couple
of flights of stairs take you to the entrance, which opens into
a small hallway and on into the spacious lounge area. Sliding
glass doors most of the length of one side overlook the terrace.
Furnishings in the lounge, as everywhere in the apartment, are
of a high quality, modern and stylish. As well lounge and dining
areas (with seating for four), the living room is equipped with
a television and hi-fi.
The kitchen is situated off the living area in one corner and
has cooker/oven, microwave, dishwasher and dryer; a toilet near
the entrance also houses the washing machine.
A corridor runs from the the lounge part of the living room; two
bedrooms (one double and one with two bunk beds) and a bathroom
lie off this; it leads at the end to the third bedroom (a double),
which has its own access outside - a small breakfast area screened
from the rest of the terrace.
The terrace is south-facing, spacious - about 70m2 altogether
- and nicely planted and furnished. It has an outdoor shower at
one end, a main dining/lounging/sunbathing part in the middle,
partly shaded, and a small screened off area at the other end
which can also be accessed from the main bedroom.
Altogether, although this is, strictly speaking, an apartment,
with the large terrace, and light, spacious interior it doesn't
feel like one. It would be an ideal base for people wanting a
lazy sea-side holiday in a stylish, laid back part of France.

Local
Guide:
Within walking distance from the apartment
is the small, chic beach-side district of Le Moulleau.
Its outdoor cafés and bars provide an ideal opportunity
to while away the hours and watch the fashion-conscious walk
in and out of the nearby boutiques. Le Moulleau offers a variety
of everyday shops including bakery, butcher and fishmonger.
There is a pedestrian zone leading to the beach, perfect for
a stroll before dinner at a local restaurant. At night, you
can stroll along Le Moulleau's jetty to watch the sunset as
the Phare du Cap Ferret (lighthouse)
winks at you from the other side of
the bassin. It's an unforgettable scene.
For the more active, Le Moulleau has its own sailing club
from where you can hire boats to sail the Bassin and the
beautiful Banc d’Arguin, a sand-bank
nature reserve that is a wonderful
place to stop off for an hour or so. Bikes can be hired locally
and there are cycle routes along the seafront.
Arcachon
is a popular French resort and provides plenty of options
for visitors; a free electric bus service runs all day and
much of the night between Le Moulleau and Arcachon. Ferries
run from Arcachon and Le Moulleau to a host of destinations
including Cap Ferret, a stylish resort on
the other side of the Basin at the point of the peninsula
of the Presqu'Ile de Cap Ferret. The 'petit train'
runs from close to the jetty on Cap Ferret over to the magnificent
rollers of the Atlantic beach on the other side of the peninsula,
a wonderful trip, especially for children. Or, without kids,
why not have dinner and return on the late evening ferry?
The Banc d’Arguin sits at the foot of the famous Dune
du Pyla, the largest sand dune in Europe, standing
at over 100 metres. A journey to the summit (try it without
the staircase provided!) is a must; sunrise and sunset are
the best times.
Back into Arcachon, stroll along the seafront or through the
delightful Ville d’Hiver (Winter Town)
and explore its fabulous collection of eclectic villas. There
is also a lovely park (the Parc Mauresque) to cool off in
the shade, watch the locals play petanques and enjoy the view
over to the Ville d'Eté (the summer town, the main
resort district of Arcachon) below and to the sea beyond.
The Arcachon Basin is packed full of oyster farms
and you will have no difficulty finding these delicacies to
dine on in one of the town’s many seafood restaurants,
or head to Gujan-Mestras (France's oyster-farming
capital) or one of the villages on the Presqu'Ile (l'Herbe
is recommended) and 'déguster' a few at the water's
edge direct from ostréiculteur (oyster
farmer).
The Basin is also home to wide variety of birdlife and consequently
is a popular birdwatching destination. In fact, there are
birdwatching reserves at nearby Parc Ornotholiqique
du Teich and Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird
Island) in the basin which can be visited by boats that depart
from the Arcachon jetties.
As a change from the sea-side, a little further down the coast
there is bathing in Sanguinet and Biscarrosse
lakes - with no ocean currents to worry about and the forest
setting providing plenty of shelter, these are especially
popular with families with young children.
If you’re feeling completely ‘beached out’
why not take the opportunity to explore some of the region’s
vineyards, such as Margaux, Lafite
or Mouton Rothschild.
Golfers
are spoilt for choice; there are two great courses nearby,
at Arcachon International and Gujan
Mestras (the latter has been used on the European
PGA Tour). There are numerous cycle tracks, and opportunities
for horse-riding. For children, Zooland and
Aqualand are nearby.
The
city of Bordeaux is an hour away and is a
good option for a day-trip, whether it’s boutique shopping,
sight-seeing or culture. Walking around the 18th century old
town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you can begin to imagine
the city’s commercial and maritime past.
