Location :  Map Ref D4

Manoir d'Agenais lies in the heart of rural Gascony, 'the land that time forgot'! This is France at
its best - gentle countryside, historic market towns and fine cuisine.

The nearest main town is Casteljaloux, 8 kms north.

The area is served well by airports: Bergerac and Bordeaux airports are the closest (both about 1hr15m drive). Toulouse is another option for flying into this region. Also, it's a short distance (about 7kms) from the auto-route, so its easily accessed by car too.

Accommodation :

Manoir d'Agenais was renovated in the early 2000s, to provide a high standard of accommodation. Over 300 years old, the 2 year renovation programme employed artisans thus enuring much of the property's character was retained.

Please note that low wooden beams and doorframes are a feature of character properties such as this - so please mind your head! Also, there is a polished wooden staircase which could be slippery in the wrong footwear, or socks.

Ground Floor - see floor plan
The downstairs living space provides 3 double bedrooms, a large living/dining room, second lounge, kitchen, separate utility room plus an extra toilet.

The kitchen is fitted with oak units and a breakfast table for 10 people. It is equipped with all of the essential mod cons whilst the separate utility room provides washing machine, dryer, fridge freezer and sink unit.

The main sitting room is huge. It is open-plan with the dining room and has French doors accessing the veranda. The high-beamed ceiling merely adds to the feeling of space. The room has plenty of cosy rugs, sofas and chairs plus satellite TV, video and cd player.

A few short steps up from the kitchen leads you into the informal dining area which is really a continuation of the main sitting room. Once again, a feeling of space is created by a high-beamed ceiling. This room provides a dining table to seat 14 people and for games enthusiasts there is a pool table, exercise bike and dart board.

A second lounge / Quiet Room is situated off the kitchen, again with plenty of seating. It is a private area for relaxing, reading and playing board games. There is a superb Girondine fireplace with wood stove and rugs over earth-fired tiled floor.

The ground floor also has a handy independent WC.

Two of the three bedrooms look out over the rear meadow and woods; the other one opens onto the pool and woods.

First Floor - see floor plan
The remaining four double bedrooms are located upstairs and reached via a mezzanine walkway. The last bedroom along the mezzanine walkway is the tower room; this room is very spacious and has views overlooking the pool, woods and fields and the 12th century church.

Outside
The grounds extend to 9 acres including well-kept and secluded garden, a small lake (fenced off for safety), private woods and a large, heated and floodlit swimming pool.

Plenty of garden furniture is provided for lounging by the pool. A large, covered porch which can be used for playing table tennis.

The veranda is lined with wisteria and geraniums and is ideal for dining; tables and chairs are provided and there is a built-in BBQ. Drinks and dinner on the veranda with views over the fields is one of many ways to really enjoy holidaying at Manoir d'Agenais.

Electric gates lead to the tree-lined driveway and there is parking for several cars in front of the property.

Guide :

Casteljaloux literally means jealous castle but no-one seems to know quite how the town earned this rather curious name. It’s a pleasant market town with plenty of shops and restaurants. The market is held on Saturday.

Just to the south of the town is the large lake of Catelajaloux, Lac de Clarens, which is great for a day out for the family. Here you can fish, cycle, walk in the woods, ride a horse, go boating or go for a swim. There's golf too plus tennis courts and swimming pool in Casteljaloux..

New in Casteljaloux is the Thermal Spa. Locals inform us that is really is a luxurious place to wallow and revitalise the body and mind; below we have provided a link to the spa’s website.

This area of France is very rural and almost untouched by time. It is an ideal territory for exploring the ancient towns, vineyards and châteaux of Gascony and thus avoid the tourists and traffic of the ever-popular Dordogne.

Nérac, La Bastide d’Armagnac, Mézin, Pujols and Villeneuve-sur-Lot are popular ancient towns to visit. Agen, the capital of Lot-et-Garonne, has a fine Musée des Beaux-Arts, not to mention a host of opportunities for buying prunes – Agen is the prune capital of the world!

For day-trips into the Lot valley, drive east towards Cahors. Also worthy of a day-trip is Auch with its famous cathedral and pretty setting over-looking the Gers river.

There are golf courses in the area including Casteljaloux, Barbaste and Marmande. For cyclists there are numerous tracks which enable you to safely see the countryside. For the really adventurous, there is an airstrip near Marmande for private flying.

Naturally there are plenty of wine-tasting opportunities and if you are interested in undertaking a private visit to some of Bordeaux’s finest châteaux, this can be arranged for you by a local contact of ours. Whether it’s St. Emilion, Sauternes, or Entre-Deux-Mers, this could be your chance to sample a selection of grand cru wines. Festivals for wine, food and music occur in the region throughout the year. Further south and you enter Armagnac country – more opportunities for tastings!

Beach lovers should head to Arcachon or Biscarrosse. These resorts are approximately 80-90 minutes driving distance. Arcachon has numerous attractions including the magnificent Dune du Pyla – Europe’s highest sand dune – and a stroll around the Winter Town which is home to a range of eclectic villas.

The city of Bordeaux is less than an hour away and is a good option for a day-trip, whether it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing or culture. Walking around the 18th century old town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you can begin to imagine the city’s commercial and maritime past.
