Summary
Relais
Deux-Mers is a magnificent 17C mill conversion located in the heart
of Bordeaux's Entre-Deux-Mers wine country. The British owners have,
with considerable thought and style, renovated a 300 year-old mill
and adjacent farmhouse to create a luxurious family home full of
French country style blended with modern features. The impact
of the property is immediate as you enter the wide driveway and
courtyard and view the striking 'u' shape design. The property is
built in the region's attractive blanched Girondine stone and there
are huge fireplaces and oak beams too. Relais Deux-Mers is a thoroughly
memorable holiday home, perfect for two families or a larger group
of friends.

Accommodation :
Guests
catch their first glimpse of Relais Deux Mers from the road that
passes the property. It’s rather inspiring to say the least.
A gravelled drive way then sweeps you into the large courtyard and
the property stands, with some majesty, in front of you.
Offering
5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and 5 WCs, the house is not only spacious
- 400m2 - but provides ample facilities for groups and families
sharing the house.
The
Relais is built in a flat ‘u’ shape; the two parallel
wings provide the living accommodation and are connected by a
large conservatory which opens out on the courtyard
at the front and to the garden and pool area at the rear.
The renovations – which took over a year – have been
sympathetic in retaining character features. The pale, thick Girondine
stone is pleasing to the eye and the interior is dominated by
large oak beams, none more so than in the attic bedroom.
The furnishings and décor are clean and stylish throughout
ensuring guests will have an extremely comfortable, luxurious
stay.
Interior - Farmhouse Wing
The farmhouse kitchen has been completely renovated
and the use of thick oak for surfaces and the island unit gives
it a French, country feel. It is fully equipped with stainless
steel oven with 4-ring stove, grill, fridge feezer, microwave
and dishwasher. A large utility room with a washing
machine is located next to the kitchen.
Adjacent to the kitchen is the main dining room
which provides a table for 10 and has French doors opening on
to the courtyard. The stairs lead from the dining room to two
upstairs double bedrooms, sharing the main bathroom
and WC. The window at the front end of the landing
not only provides natural light but a fine view of the grounds
to the front of the property.
There is a further downstairs WC located off
the dining room.
Interior
- Mill Wing
The other side of the house comprises living room, mezzanine
area, two ground floor double bedrooms - both with original
stone fireplaces - and a stunning attic bedroom,
ideal for children.
The living room has a double-height beamed ceiling
giving it an incredibly spacious feel. The living room is entered
from the wide conservatory; there are no doorways, just open space
and so the entrance to the lounge really is quite dramatic. The
Girondine fireplace is big - and it needs to be to blast heat
into the room! There is plenty of comfy seating plus satellite
TV, DVD player, hi-fi and video-recorder
plus children's videos.
Leading from the living room is a curved wooden staircase to the
mezzanine area where there is a small library,
comfy chairs and coffee table - perfect for quiet time with a
book..
The two large double bedrooms downstairs are similarly clad in
old Girondine stone. The master bedroom provides
en-suite facilities - shower room
and WC. The bedrooms are separated by an ancient
stone staircase leading to the attic room.
This 60m2 attic room stretches the entire length of the ‘Mill
Wing’ of the house. With its low beams and huge floorspace,
it is ideal for kids. There is sufficient space to sleep at least
four children and they have their own dedicated bathroom.
The bathroom is ‘open’ to the room, however, and so
would be less suitable for older children.
Conservatory
& Terrace
At one end of conservatory there is a sauna room
and shower with WC. The rear
section of the house is perfect for long summer days. A cool,
covered terraced area provides plenty of dining
facilities including Moroccan-tiled table, drinks fridge,
BBQ and pizza oven. The terrace also
has a sink unit and work surfaces.
Outside
The back garden is dominated by the stylish sunken swimming
pool. There are no steps to the pool; there is a ‘walk-in’
slope at one end, and so care might be needed with young children.
For security, there is a wall surrounding the pool to a height
of 1.2m.
In all, there is over 1 acre of gardens to enjoy,
with plenty of mature trees and lawn for kids to play.
The
owners are very welcoming to families; two cots are available on
request and babysitting can be arranged. Also, there are bikes and
a children's trailer available for guests use.

Local
Guide:
Rauzan
The local village has a good selection of all the staples of French
life and you will soon be in a routine of daily trips to the bakers
and butchers - oh, and the wine co-op too! Rauzan also has a fine
13th century château
Local Area
It's a short drive to the famous medieval bastide town and UNESCO
World Heritage Site, St. Emilion. Situated on two
limestone hills that look out over the Dordogne river, St. Emilion
is famous for its innumerable world-class wines and accompanying
châteaux. It is also a town of significant historical interest
with its medieval buildings and ancient cobbled streets. There are
many fine restaurants for long alfresco lunches and dinners plus
fantastic sunsets over the valleys and endless vineyards.
Naturally there are plenty of wine-tasting opportunities
and if you are interested in undertaking a private visit to some
of Bordeaux’s finest chateaux, this can be arranged locally
for you. Whether it’s St. Emilion, Sauternes,
Médoc or Margaux, this
could be your chance to sample a selection of grand cru wines.
The surrounding countryside is home to many market towns which display
their finest regional produce once a week. This is also a good area
to stock up on brocantes.
For day-trips into the Dordogne valley you can
either drive east beyond Bergerac or, alternatively, take a train
from nearby Libourne.
Beach lovers should head to Arcachon, Cap Ferret
or Lacanau. These resorts are approximately 90
minutes driving distance. Arcachon has numerous attractions including
the magnificent Dune du Pyla – Europe’s
highest sand dune – and a stroll around the Winter
Town which is home to a range of eclectic villas.
The city of Bordeaux is an hour away and is a good
option for a day-trip, whether it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing
or culture. Walking around the 18th century old town centre (Quartier
St. Pierre), you can begin to imagine the city’s commercial
and maritime past.
There are six golf courses in and around Bordeaux,
the nearest ones being Golf de Tynac and Golf de Bordeaux-Cameyrac.
Towards Bergerac is Chateau des Vigiers, recognised as one of the
country’s top courses.
For cyclists there are numerous tracks which enable you to see the
countryside from the safety of off-road cycle tracks.
One of the best is disused railway line running between Sauveterre-de-Guyenne
and Bordeaux. At a distance of 64kms each way, this is not for the
beginner although the route is mostly flat. There is a half-way
house for a good lunch and a glass of wine to help you along your
way.
Other nearby activities include horse-riding and
tennis.
