About
Parentis
Parentis
Tourist Office
Parentis-en-Born
is a traditional Landes town located at the heart of Aquitaine's
Great Lakes, east of the Parentis & Biscarrosse lake. It is
an area noted for a it's natural beauty and range of activities,
especially walking, cycling and water-sports.
Parentis a lively town in summer. Local attractions
include the Roland Portalier bull-running arena where
'course landaise' shows are staged, the locals' spectacular highly-skilled,
non-violent sport. The town also features a 15th century
church (Eglise St Pierre). Fresh-food markets are
held three days a week. Several festivals are held in sumer too,
including nights of the infectious, syncopated sound of Landais
brass bands ("La Nuit des Bandas"), children's
festivals and the Lake Festival in August.
Lake beaches: there is a sandy, supervised (July
& August) beach a short walk from the residence. Lake beaches
are a popular alternative to ocean beaches, especially for families
with young children because there are no waves or currents to worry
about, and pine trees close to water's edge offer shade from the
sun.
Lake beach sports, including volleyball, petanque,
water-polo, beach soccer and other kid's games.
Lake watersports: sailing, windsurfing,
water-skiing and kayaking at the local
lake. There is also a small marina.
The local lake is also a great opportunity
for whiling away the hours in tranquility, listening to the water
lapping the sandy shores. The surrounding forest is perfect for
picnics and rambling.
Cycling trails: a pleasant forest trail runs from
Parentis to Biscarrosse (9 kms) and from there to Biscarrosse-Plage
(a further 6 kms). A local 35 kms trail offers a chance to explore
5 local villages. Bike hire available in Parentis.
Ocean beaches, surfing & body-boarding : there
are excellent beaches and fun waves at at Biscarrosse-Plage (18
kms) and Mimizan-Plage (25 kms), and surf schools operate in both
towns.
Also available to try locally: fishing, horse-riding,
tennis, golf and adventure park.
Client recommendation:
"Hotel Flo in Parentis has a fantastic restaurant – the
best food I had all of my holiday – I can recommend the fixed
price menu – all local specialities and beautifully cooked
– delicious! And very well priced" (Mrs A VENN, June
2007)

Discover
the Côte
Landaise region of Aquitaine
Parentis is
an excellent base for discovering the pine forests, lakes and dune-backed
sandy beaches of the Côte Landaise. There's
also the outstanding natural beauty of the bassin d'Arcachon,
and the history and culture of Bordeaux and its
environs. It's all in easy reach.
About
30 kms north of Parentis, south of Arcachon, is the famous Dune
du Pyla, the largest sand dune in Europe, standing at over
100 metres. A journey to the summit (try it without the staircase
provided!) is a must; sunrise and sunset are the best times.
Heading
north of the Dune is the nature, wildlife and, above all, oysters of the bassin d'Arcachon and Presqu'Ile de Cap
Ferret (reached by foot-ferry from Arcachon). Take le
Petit Train across the penisula to climb one of the Atlantic
dunes, followed by an early-ish dinner in one of Cap Ferret village's
many bistros. Bliss!
Around the other side of the basin is Arcachon, a
popular French resort; a part of the town known as the Ville d'Hiver
(winter town) is well worth strolling to see the quirky architecture
of its many 19th century villas.
The bassin d'Arcachon is also home to wide variety
of birdlife and consequently is a popular birdwatching destination.
In fact, there are birdwatching reserves at nearby Parc
Ornotholiqique du Teich and Ile aux Oiseaux
(Bird Island) in the Bassin which can be visited by boats that depart
from the Arcachon jetties. This is a prime bird habitat -
the Bassin d'Arcachon is so shallow that only 20% of it is submerged
at low tide.
If you're feeling beached out, Bordeaux is well
under an hour away and is a good option for a day-trip, whether
it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing or culture. Walking around
the 18th century old town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you can
begin to imagine the city’s commercial and maritime past.
Medieval gems of the Gironde east of Bordeaux are also wonderful
days out; St Emilion, with its 11th century basilica,
is the best known but can be busy; St Macaire and
La Réole are also enjoyable.
Why not take the opportunity to explore some of the region’s
vineyards? The famous Graves and Sauternes vineyards
are a 45 minute drive north east in the direction of Bordeaux and
Langon.
For
golfers, Biscarrosse
golf course is just 10 kms away, with 9 hole par 32 and
18 hole par 72 courses. Towards Arcachon, approx. 40 kms away, there
are also the Gujan-Mestras and Arcachon
courses, 27 and 18 holes respectively.
