Why Choose Aquitaine For a Golf Holiday?
France may not be the obvious choice of destination for a golfing holiday. Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Scotland are probably more natural choices.

However, golf is a boom sport in France and has been for 10 years or so now. Thankfully, it hasn’t picked up the snooty side of the game prevalent in some UK and US clubs – the French treat the game much more informally.

In fact, you probably didn’t know that golf in France started in Aquitaine. What’s more, golf in continental Europe started in Aquitaine! That’s right, Pau Golf Club (founded 1856) was the first course built in Europe outside of the British Isles. And Biarritz Le Phare (founded 1889) was the second! Seven of Aquitaine's 40+ courses date back to pre-war times.

Not only does Aquitaine have a rich heritage of golf, the pedigree is very high, with clusters of great golf courses around the Biarritz and Bordeaux areas in particular. You’ll also enjoy lower prices and less crowds than the South of France golf courses.

So, if you are looking for a memorable golf holiday, or you’re simply looking to sneak a couple of rounds in whilst on a family holiday, then Aquitaine is an excellent choice.

Five Reasons to Play Golf in Aquitaine
High quality golf courses - 5 are ranked in France’s Top 15 and the same 5 courses – Moliets, Médoc (Châteaux), Seignosse, Hossegor & Chiberta - are listed in Continental Europe’s Top 100*. Biarritz le Phare is used for the LPGA European tour

Courses are much less crowded than the South of France, Spain or Portugal
Enjoy the golfing heritage – there’s more to golf here than just a string of modern, ‘American-ised’ courses

Which Courses Should I Play?
You are spoilt for choice! Whichever corner of Aquitaine you find yourself, you’ll have at least one high quality course to choose from.

You can use the map (right) to see the courses listed. We’ve grouped them into geographical clusters so that you can identify the courses available in each location.

Our personal preference is the clusters near Biarritz on La Côte Basque and La Côte Landais. It’s the combination of things you get here – several good courses in close proximity; a pedigree of golf; the ocean and mountains; the warm climate; the charms of the Basque Country. Oh, and the green fee discount if you buy the Biarritz golf pass!

You might also bump into José Maria Olazabal – he 's a member at Fonterrabie in San Sebastian around the corner in Spain and is known to often cross the border and play a round in the French Basque Country.

You might have guessed that we’re golfers, so if you would like some advice about Aquitaine’s courses, please do call us on 0870 6092845 or email us.

Golf Passes
The Biarritz Golf Pass has been going for some time now. It entitles you to 5 rounds for the price of 4. You can buy the pass at a participating golf club. Of the participating courses, Seignosse and Moliets the most impressive. All the courses are worth playing though.

Furthermore, our local partner, Biarritz Golfing Experience can arrange your tee-times and transport for you.

Also, launched in 2006, we now have the Médoc Golf Pass. This is a real boon as there’s a good cluster of courses around the area. Best of all is Golf du Médoc, a real gem of a course which has been used on the PGA tour in the past. Again, you can pick up a pass at one of the participating clubs.
