024 Bel Air, Casteljaloux
Three Reasons to Choose Bel Air:
Private pool and south facing terrace
• Close to Casteljaloux - market, restaurants, golf, horse-riding, spa, lake
• In the heart of tranquil, Lot-et-Garonne countryside

Summary :

This detached 2 bedroom villa/bungalow is owned by English couple who live here outside of the summer season. Because it is their home, it very well maintained and cared for. The local market town of Casteljaloux is in walking distance and there are plenty of attractions to this unspoilt region of south west France: ancient river towns, rolling countryside and famous Gascon foods such as foie gras.

Bel Air is an ideal place to stay for one or two couples or a family who prefer countryside to beach.

Bel Air lies in a semi-rural location in the hamlet of Peyrama but is only 20 minutes walk to the market town, Casteljaloux. The bungalow is accessed from the main road via a side-track. There are a few other houses nearby. Some road noise is audible from the D291 Casteljaloux road - it's a rural road.

Casteljaloux is in the Lot-et-Garonne départment of south west France. This is a mostly rural area dominated, not surprisingly, by the huge Lot and Garonne rivers. There is plenty to offer all types of visitor and best of all, arguably, is the absence of crowds in the high season, unlike the Dordogne to the north.

Bergerac and Bordeaux airports are an hour’s drive.
Toulouse airport is a short distance further.

Accommodation :

Bel Air is a modern and well-kept two bedroom bungalow providing straightforward and homely holiday accommodation.

The main entrance to the house is from the back garden. French doors open into the brightly decorated lounge which is the main room for relaxing. There is a lovely log-burning fireplace, sofa and chairs plus a large TV with satellite. A small table for 6 is provided if ever you choose to eat indoors!

The two bedrooms are both double size and the larger of the two provides one double bed and bunk beds so in theory the bungalow could sleep up to 6. Both rooms look out on to the back garden. There is plenty of storage and hanging space available.

The kitchen is small and has a French-feel to it with its open units. Since the home is an English one you are guaranteed having a kettle, toaster and an oven with hob! There is also a fridge freezer in the kitchen whilst the washing machine is situated in the bathroom – by no means unusual in France.

At the end of the hallway is the bathroom which has corner shower, basin and wc.

The sloping back garden is a good size and south-facing and private swimming pool just outside the house.

There is a lovely and very peaceful and shady terrace just outside the lounge, ideal for dining out or sipping a cool beer in the hot sun (trust us - we speak from experience!). Garden furniture is provided.

There is sufficient parking for two or more cars at the front of the house.

Guide :

This area of France is very rural and almost untouched by time. It is an ideal territory for exploring the ancient towns, vineyards and châteaux of Gascony and yet avoid the tourists and traffic of the ever-popular Dordogne.

Nérac, La Bastide d’Armagnac, Mézin, Pujols and Villeneuve-sur-Lot are popular ancient towns to visit. Agen, the capital of Lot-et-Garonne, has a fine Musée des Beaux-Arts, not to mention a host of opportunities for buying prunes - Agen is the prune capital of the world!

For day-trips into the Lot valley, drive east towards Cahors. Also worthy of a day-trip is Auch with its famous 15th century Cathédrale Ste-Marie and pretty setting over-looking the Gers river.

The nearest town is Casteljaloux (literally meaning jealous castle). The town dates back to the 12th century and there are still some original 15th and 16th century buildings in the old town. It’s a pleasant market town with plenty of shops and restaurants with a market held on Saturday. The excellent tourist office is inside the Maison du Roy, where both Louis XIII and Louis XIV have stayed.

Just to the south of the town is the large lake of Casteljaloux, Lac de Clarens, which is great for a day out for the family. Here you can fish, cycle, walk in the woods, ride a horse, play tennis, go boating or windsurfing or take a swim. There is also a restaurant at the lake. New in Casteljaloux is the thermal spa. Locals inform us that is really is a luxurious place to wallow and revitalise the body and mind; below we have provided a link to the spa’s website.

There are golf courses in the area including Casteljaloux, Barbaste and Marmande. For cyclists there are numerous tracks which enable you to safely see the countryside. For the really adventurous, there is an airstrip near Marmande for private flying. There are tennis courts and swimming pool in Casteljaloux.

Naturally there are plenty of wine-tasting opportunities - one of the local appelations is Cahors. If you are interested in undertaking a private visit to some of Bordeaux’s finest châteaux, this can be arranged for you by a local contact of ours. Whether it’s St. Emilion, Sauternes, or Entre-Deux-Mers, this could be your chance to sample a selection of grand cru wines. Festivals for wine, food and music occur in the region throughout the year. Further south and you enter Armagnac country – more opportunities for tastings!

Beach lovers should head to Arcachon or Bisacarrosse. These resorts are approximately 75 minutes driving distance. Arcachon has numerous attractions including the magnificent Dune du Pyla – Europe’s highest sand dune – and a stroll around the Winter Town which is home to a range of eclectic villas.

The city of Bordeaux is less than an hour away and is a good option for a day-trip, whether it’s boutique shopping, sight-seeing or culture. Walking around the 18th century old town centre (Quartier St. Pierre), you can begin to imagine the city’s commercial and maritime past.
