In
Our Opinion... This
ocean-side résidence of just 89 apartments enjoys a
fantastic location in Biarritz on the Basque coast, with
superb views of both the sea and mountains.
It's a short walk to the beach and the heart of Biarritz is just 2kms - there's a bus-stop right outside the résidence.
There's
a very handy supermarket across the road and a superb play
area for kids at the bottom of the hill.
In the summer holidays this is a great place for families.
At other times of the year, Eugénie is popular with
couples and surfers here to enjoy the Atlantic swells.

The
résidence lies just outside the town centre on the route to Bidart. The plages Marbella and Milday are the nearest and both are a 5 minute walk.
It is possible to walk into Biarritz town centre - it would take 20+ minutes.
This is a good option to stay for those arriving without a car
- the train station and airport are both a short taxi ride
away.

Aquitaine's Guide to
Biarritz
So, why did generations of royalty from across Europe choose
to holiday in Belle Époque Biarritz? Why did Napoleon
III build a palace here for his wife, the Emperess Eugénie?
Why did Hollywood stars such as Rita Hayworth and Frank Sinatra
vacation here in the 1950s? Why, in 1959, did the makers of
Cadillac name its 25ft long convertible after the town? And
why, today, are French celebrities such as Alain Prost choosing
to live here rather than on the French Riviera?
Well, the rugged and wild beaches are undeniably
spectactular. The surfing is amongst the
best in Europe. It is one of France's main centres for thalassotherapy.
There are several highly rated and historic golf courses
in and around the town. There's a sailing club
at the Pointe de la Vierge and a scuba diving
school at the fishing port.
There's a host of fine restaurants and an
art-deco casino. The boutique
shopping is some of the best in France. And the warm all-year-round
climate might have something to do with it.
Above all, though, it's Biarritz's attitude and atmosphere
that wins us over. Stylish and sophisticated yet laid-back,
with none of the Côte d'Azur's pretence. This may because
of the town's eclectic and unique mix of surfers, boutique
shoppers, the retired, and families on holiday.
We suspect, however, that it's the local Basque residents,
proud and resilient as they are, that make sure the town keeps
its feet firmly on the ground.

Discover
the Region
The
Basque Country is a little world all of its own. The regional
cuisine and architecture provide character enough but more
than that, this ‘country’ also has its own language.
For a ‘formal’ introduction to Basque culture,
try the Musée Basque at Bayonne.
However, the best way to soak up the culture is to visit
one of the many fêtes or ‘festivals of strength’
that take place in the high season, or, even better, watch
a game of pelota. The fastest ball game
in the world, this is perhaps the most vivid image of Basque
country.
As well as Biarritz, the utterly delightful
St Jean de Luz are on your doorstep and
whether its beaches, shops, restaurants or festivals you
are looking for, both of these towns are hard to beat. Stylish
but without the pretence of the Riviera, both are colourful
and vibrant seaside towns with plenty of family evening
entertainment. They are the sorts of places where you will
see whole families sitting down to start dinner at 10.30pm!
St Jean de Luz is recognised as the capital of Basque cuisine
and is noted for its seafood (it is one of Rick Stein’s
favourite places) and use of the spicy Basque staple pimento.
A great trip for the kids is a ride on Le Petit
Train de la Rhune. Standing over 900m high, La
Rhune is the distinct and symbolic peak of the western Pyrénées.
It can be reached by foot – a lovely day’s walking
– or by funicular train. The 360 degree views from
the summit are spectacular.
There are great beaches all along the coast
from the Spanish border at Hendaye, north into the Landes
and Gironde départements. Because the Côte
d’Argent is so vast, the beaches are less crowded
than on the Mediterranean.
The area is totally under-visited for its golf
despite the game’s rich history in this region and
the presence of some wonderful courses: Biarritz Le Phare
is in walking distance from the résidence and there's
also Chantaco, Nivelle, Arcangues, Makila, Chiberta, Hossegor,
Seignosse and Moliets within an hour’s drive. José-Maria
Olazabal’s course, Fuenterrabia, is just across the
border into Spain.
Horse-riding (Equestrian centre 3 kms away in Il'Barritz),
mountain-biking and fishing (sea
and river) are also popular. There are tennis courts
at Golf de la Nivelle and Ciboure Tennis Club - both offer
tuition in July and August.
Surfers will already be familiar with the Côte
Basque, and there are plenty of surf schools for beginners
plus a diving school and sailing
school at nearby Fort Socoa.
The countryside is a delight; the rolling green hills are
popular with the few British visitors that the region receives.
The foothills rise to the mountains of the Pyrénées
which are home to dozens of hiking trails
including the famous coast-to-coast GR10 track. Eagles,
wild horses and the occasional brown bear make this one
of Europe’s most exotic wildlife locations. Bird-watchers
will be kept busy twitching. The Pyrénées
also provide thrill-seekers with a range of extreme sports
from white-water rafting to paragliding.
The mountain landscapes are at their finest in the Haut-Béarn
region.
Other suggestions for day-trips from the town:
• A tour of Basque country villages:
Ascain, Sare, Espelette, Cambo-les-Bains,
La Bastide Clairence, Ainhoa,and St-Jean-Pied-de-Port
• A visit to Bayonne, the under-rated
‘capital’ of the Pays Basque
• Wine-tasting in the vineyards of
Irouleguy
• A visit to the city of Pau for
sight-seeing, boutique shopping and café-crawling
• Crossing the border into Spain
for a visit to San Sebastian, Pamplona
or the Guggenheim museum at
Bilbao
